Change of Visa Status

You may request H-1B visa sponsorship after your J-1 visa status has been fully extended.  Click here to see your maximum possible length of DS-2019 extension.

Steps to change to H-1B visa status:

  1. Speak with your hospital department about 12 to18 months before your maximum period of stay in order to confirm that they are willing and able to sponsor you for H visa status. H-1B visa status is employer dependent and must be coordinated by the hospital department.
  2. If you have a two-year home residency, you must be released from this obligation in order to be eligible for H-1B visa status.  Click here for more two-year home residency details.
  3. Your hiring department should send the H-1B paperwork to the Partners Office for International Professionals and Students (PIPS) 7 to 8 months before the final expiration date on your DS-2019.
