Used Furniture

You might want to consider buying used furniture in order to save money. You cannot normally negotiate prices with a furniture store, but you can always negotiate prices with people who are selling their own used items.

Some places to look are:

  • Craigslist (see the For Sale section)
  • Salvation Army (search for Thrift Store locations)
  • MIT Furniture Exchange (you must have a valid Harvard Identification card to shop here)
  • Offerup
  • Facebook Marketplace

People also sell their furniture outside of their houses at yard/garage/tag sales that are common in the summer. Look for advertisements in the local newspaper or signs around your neighborhood during the nicer weather. Also look at all bulletin boards cafes, supermarkets, and student centers on local university campuses for advertisements.

Various used items stores are located near the Harvard Avenue stop on the “B” Green Line train.
