Personal Space
"Personal space" is an important concept in the U.S., which refers to the relationship between the physical space and psychological comfort of personal interactions. Not following these guidelines could result in others feeling uncomfortable and quickly ending conversations.
- Firmly shake hands for 2 seconds when meeting somebody for the first time or at the beginning formal business meetings.
- Stand about two feet (a little more than half a meter) away during conversations.
- If you walk into an auditorium or seated area that is not crowded, leave an extra seat between you and the next person. However, it is acceptable to sit next to someone if you know them or the room is crowded.
- Say "Excuse me" if you accidentally touch someone or briefly block their view (such as walking in front of somebody as they look at things from a distance while shopping).
- Always wait in line. Do not cut in front of others or push.
- Do not touch children you do not know, even if you only intend to pat them on the head.
